Biomass is an important transition fuel as industries move away from fossil fuels, and the traceability of biomass used from source to factory has not been transparent, creating challenges in verifying the source of their biomass fuel. This creates a potential risk for non-sustainable sources such as native forests to enter supply chains, creating the need to ensure a sustainable and traceable biomass supply chain is in place to prevent deforestation in Sri Lanka. With leading companies coming on board, this business model marks the start of an exciting journey where more than 2,500 farmers will be encouraged to grow ‘Gliricidia’ trees as fence crops, to be sustainably harvested by LBS and supplied to MAS.”
